Sep 27 PAT Gold Star Mothers Day

Governor Cooper Has Proclaimed Sunday, September 27th As Gold Star Mother's Day 2020

RALEIGH, N.C.—The North Carolina Department of Military and Veterans Affairs and First Lady Kristin Cooper hosted a virtual tribute in honor of Gold Star Mother’s Day on Thursday, September 24th, at 1:00 pm.

Since 1936, the last Sunday in September has been recognized as a day of remembrance for Gold Star Mothers, those who have lost a veteran child during military service. Due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, this was the first ever virtual Gold Star Mother’s Tribute, which featured remarks from Kerry Irvin, a military mom, and the NCDMVA’s Military Spouse of the Year.

First Lady Cooper, the daughter of a Vietnam Veteran, shared heartfelt remarks regarding her experience as a military family and addressed the importance of all military families, their sacrifice, and their service. Mrs. Cooper also read the Gold Star Mother's Proclamation here signed by Governor Cooper.

First Lady Cooper said, “It’s an honor to join the Gold Star Mothers of North Carolina to commemorate Gold Star Mother’s Day," said First Lady Cooper. "North Carolina is the most military-friendly state in the nation, and we are working hard to support our servicemembers, veterans, and military spouses and families every day. I’m a child of a veteran, and this is personal to me.”

NCDMVA Secretary Larry Hall said, “It is an honor to be able to host the Gold Star Mothers of North Carolina once again for this extraordinary occasion. The Cooper Administration understands the importance of these families to the Great State of North Carolina, and how their leadership and sacrifice leaves a lasting impact on communities. We are humbled and honored by their service.”

The event which was streamed on Microsoft Teams was attended by a host of Gold Star Moms and other supporters. To view our Facebook post of this virtual event click here.
