In 2012, the Department of Veterans Affairs’ study on veteran suicide concluded that 22 veterans a day take their own lives. That is one veteran suicide too many and 7300 veterans annually from all eras of war including WW2, Korean, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan. That is more suicides annually than the total American deaths during Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan). This is a shocking number that many find hard to believe.
Suicide prevention is the VA’s top clinical priority, and the VA has adopted a community-based approach to suicide prevention. Man’s connection with religion and religiosity is underestimated. Life is a complex journey viewed through different lenses by different faith groups. But the varied eyes of all our traditions increasingly see the great potential of people of faith to prevent the tragedy of suicide. The time is right now for the life-enhancing strengths that our communities can provide in preventing suffering and loss from suicide.
On March 20, 2020, Veterans Affairs and Unity Freewill Baptist Church have partnered up to further the progress of faith communities in preventing suicide. We invite local businesses, college representatives, professors, religious scholars, health and mental health practitioners and advocates, and family survivors of persons who had died by suicide to participate in the event. Vendors are welcome! Attached below is information on how to register as a vendor or volunteer. I am looking forward to seeing you there!
